Mid Century Monday // 48

Heather and I finally took a week off because my parents were visiting from California for Thanksgiving.  It was a wonderful week of exploring Portland, relaxing, and eating good food.  Upon their departure I got right back to picking.   Unfortunately good mcm furniture was scarce.  I found a couple interesting smalls and yet another Eames style lounge chair.

This book has hundreds of vintage pictures of Oregon. A great piece of Northwest memorabilia.

Flasks are always popular, especially around Christmas time.

I was glad to find yet another Eames style chair.  The wood shells and metal bases are in great condition.  It will look amazing once it is reupholstered in Pendleton wool.

Mid Century Mondays // 47

This weekend I captured my white whale, the Herman Miller 670 lounge chair by Charles Eames.  I have been searching for one of these ever since I began buying and selling mid century furniture.  Usually they are quite pricey because they are such an iconic chair that everyone know what they are.  The two reasons that I was able to acquire it for a reasonable price is that it is missing the ottoman and there is a break in the armrest.   The good news is that the wood chair shell is made of rosewood which is rare and sought after.  I am about to get a quote to find out what it would cost to have it repaired.  Even in its current state they seem to sell for $1200-$1300.
Here is a picture of the chair propped up.  Because of the break in the armrest the chair is not currently assembled.

Fortunately the break in the armrest did not effect the rosewood veneer.  Once it is fixed the repair should not be noticeable.

If you ever see or find and Eames chair these labels are a good way to authenticate them.

Not everything I found this week was an authentic Herman Miller piece.  This coffee table is a replica of the design by Isamu Noguchi for Herman Miller.  SOLD.

Although I have been steering away from industrial pieces lately lockers are always a popular item at Hawthorne Vitnage.  I especially liked the feet on this one and that the shelves continue through both sides to provide lots of storage

Winter is the time when lighting sells best in Portland.  I couldn't pass up this cute little vintage desk lamp.

Last but not least was this Eames "style" lounge chair and ottoman that I found on the side of the road.  It need lots of work but I think that we can get it back into working order.

Surprisingly we did not buy a single thing this weekend.  I did go to a few estate sales but did not find anything that was to my liking.  Fortunately the one thing that I like more than buying mid century furniture is selling it.  This weekend we sold quite a bit.  Here are a few of the pieces sold this weekend.

Mid Century Mondays // 43

This was the weekend of the Portland Antiques & Collectibles Expo.  It is a huge antique show that has over 1000 dealer spaces and happens in Portland 3 times a year.  On the first morning of the the show there is a spontaneous flea market which happens while all of the dealers and shoppers are waiting for the event to begin.  Dealers open up the back of their vehicles in the parking lot and sell pieces at very reasonable prices. I had a great time shopping it and filled up my truck!

I quickly refinished the slat bench coffee table.  SOLD.

Within minutes of posting a picture of this chair on Instagram (@remnantpdx) I had several dealers from all over the U.S. asking if it was "The Chair" by Hans Wegner and wanting to buy it.  Unfortunately it is a very close replica by the Empire State Chair Co.  I still have it and will be refinishing it soon.

Mid Century lounge chair also to be reupholstered.

On Sunday I returned to Expo for some last minute deals.  I didn't find any pieces that I could flip but I did find a few pieces for our own personal collection.  I have been on the search for a Cathrineholm Saturn bowl but I have never seen one in person.  This is a very welcome addition to our collection.

The one piece that I bought away from Expo this weekend this tragically reupholstered Milo Baughman recliner.  We will take joy in restoring it to its original glory and rescuing it from its jungle nightmare.

The upholstery project we completed was this Adrian Pearsall 916-CC Captain's chair.  It is now for sale at Hawthorne Vitntage for $795.

Happy Monday everyone! Chris is out picking today traveling south through Oregon. He left early as it's just going to be a one day trip. Over the weekend, Chris found these great movie letters at a garage sale. They are small in size and came with their own organizer! Now on sale at Hawthorne, per letter.

Cassina stool.  For sale $60.

This teak coffee table is so simply beautiful.  SOLD

Lately, Chris can't resist anything that is teak, it does tend to sell quickly! :)

Mid Century Modays // 40

Recently it seems like we have been overrun with seating so this weekend I kept an eye out for storage and casegoods.  My efforts were rewarded with quite a few fantastic pieces.

When I found this credenza the doors were covered with sagging burlap.  I recovered them in brand new burlap and now it looks much better.

Danish teak secretary with original key! // SOLD

Queen teak headboard with attached nightstands.  This is only the second one I have ever found.  They can be very difficult to find because queen beds were not as popular in the 1950s & 60s.

Lastly I found this wonderful Hamilton typesetter's tray.
