Portland Flea // June

We wanted to update you on some changes that are occurring here at Remnant. Chris has been the main guy here on the blog, taking photos, finding furniture, blogging, social media, and posting furniture on etsy, etc. While, I (Heather) have been upholstering and working at a local sewing shop, Modern Domestic. It's amazing that Chris has been able to do as much as he does but it was clear that he needed some more help so that he wouldn't drown from the list of to-do's. So I handed in my notice to Modern Domestic (I'll miss those gals!!), and I'm now 100% full-time Remnant employee. ;) I hope you'll enjoy hearing my voice here on the blog.

My first assignment: improve our photography. For some time now, we had talked about our lack of photography skills, so I've been hitting the books and talking to other photographers.  Our photography was so bad that we didn't even take pictures at Portland Flea because we would get the worst glare from the light coming through the windows. You could see dust spots illuminated from the lens. Not pretty! What a difference a good camera makes! We purchased our first dslr camera and at first, every photo was blurry! But now that I've slowly figured out many of the settings and am attempting to shoot in manual mode. It's not easy, but the photos are so, so much better!

We had some gifts that would be perfect for Dad's and they all sold! Vintage coolers seem to be really popular right now and why not? They're tough, metal, and come in fun colors!

At Portland Flea there are both inside vendors and outside vendors. Since we've been vending at the flea since the first flea, we always get the same spot inside.

Vintage car show for Father's Day. It was a big hit!

Millie (our 10 month old Corgi) is always the star of the show! She get's tons of attention from lots of new friends. :)

Our next event is the new market Sunday Emporium, on June 29th at Rejuvenation, 1100 SE Grand from 11-5pm.
Make sure to mark on your calendar next month's Portland Flea: July 20th!

One Busy Weekend

2014 has gotten off to a bang and we have been busier than ever.  In the past 2 weeks I have received 6 orders on Etsy for custom coffee tables.  I spent most of this week completing two of them.  On Friday I did not go out picking because I needed to meet the shipping deadline for one of the coffee tables.  On Saturday there were several sales to choose from.  I chose to shop a local semi-annual antique market.  It turned out to be the right choice as I found some amazing pieces.  On Saturday night we were up finishing an upholstery project until 10pm.  It was done just in time to bring it to Portland Flea on Sunday morning.  Portland Flea was a great success and we sold quite a few pieces.

I was amazed to find this recliner by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin.  We found a few of them last year but none of them had the original tag.  We are excited to restore this chair to its original glory.

Lately I have been staying away from industrial pieces but this one was well priced and meticulously cleaned.  I could not pass it up.  It was sold at Portland Flea.

Last bough not least I bought a piece for ourselves.  This Cathrineholm tea pot is a piece that we have been searching for a long time now.  It seems that the only pieces missing from our collection are incredibly rare and expensive.  I got the tea pot for a fair price compared to what they have been bringing on eBay lately.

Shop dog Millie spent the day with us at Portland Flea.  She got lots of attention and met many new friends.

Do to a great sales week did not bring as many pieces to the flea as we usually do.  However, it made for a nice minimalist display.  The lack of items did not seem to hamper our sales as most of the pieces were sold.

The teak sliding door credenza is one of our new items that is now available at Hawthorne Vintage.

This love seat is the piece that we worked on until 10pm on Saturday night.  It has been sold.

This beautiful lounge chair and walnut side table pairing sold quickly.

Our "deal of the day" was our sale on small with shelves of $10, $5, $2, and $1 pieces.

Mid Century Mondays // 33

Once again this was the weekend of Portland Flea.  Most of our focus was on preparing for the flea so we did not do quite as much shopping as usual but we still found a few great pieces.

One of our projects this week was reupholstering this Eames style chair & ottoman in black leather.
It has now been sold.

On Friday I was amazed to find this Danish living room set.  It needs refinishing, webbing and cushions but should be done shortly.

We have been looking for a Barcelona chair for quite some time but have never found one at a price that worked for us.  This one was greatly discounted because the front left legs is bent.  I am currently working on straightening the leg.  We have not yet decided what material we will upholster the cushions in.

This saucer lamp by Art Specialty Co. is one of my favorite desk lamps I have ever found.
Now available at Hawthorne Vintage.
On Saturday afternoon I was out running errands and not looking for furniture at all but the allure of a rummage sale proved too powerful and I came home with this great American walnut dresser.

Mid Century Mondays // 29

This was a jam-packed weekend with lots of sales to attend, projects to complete, and the monthly flea market that we vend at. My first and favorite score of the weekend was this Seth Thomas starburst clock. I first saw it about a year ago at a local shop but it was NFS. Well they finally put it up for sale and I was glad to snatch it up. I have a new quartz movement for it coming in the mail today.  //Update//  Sold on Etsy and sent to Australia.

We also got 3 Cathrineholm pieces for our collection.  The stripe bowl and plate were won on eBay and the little 4'' bowl was given to us by our friend @jaspervintage.

I have not been buying a lot of industrial lately but this 72 bin storage unit was amazing.  It sold quickly at Portland Flea.

My most shocking find of the weekend is side table by Peter Hvidt for France & Son.  Surprisingly it was at a motorcycle swap meet.  SOLD.

I also got this project coffee table at the swap meet.  I tried giving it a quick light refinishing.
Here is the table after I sanded it.
Here is the finished product at Portland Flea.  I was not able to get all the flaws out so I priced it at just $50.  It sold in the first 5 minutes.

Here is our booth at Portland Flea.  I found this Westnofa chair and ottoman this week.  It is extremely comfortable.  Now at Hawthorne Vintage For $225.

One of the great summer events in Portland is neighborhood garage sales.  Any given weekend several neighborhoods have 50-100 garage sales.  This weekend I attended neighborhood sales in Happy Valley, OR and the Laurelhurst neighborhood.  My efforts here rewarded as I found some great pieces.  This Sunday was also the monthly Portland Flea event.  We finished a few pieces just in time to fill our booth.

Our Z chair and sofa set got a lot of looks at the Flea and is now available at Hawthorne Vintage.
The Danish coffee table, wine rack, and gooseneck lamp were all found this weekend.

I went outside of our usual category with this early 20th century English Oak tea cart.  I am sure it will do well for us at the Vintage Design Collective.

Our reupholstered Westnofa lounge chair and ottoman was the final sale of the day at the Flea.
In true flea market fashion it sold in the final moments for an offer I couldn't refuse.

What did you find this week?

Mid Century Mondays // 20

Most of this weekend was spent preparing for the Portland Flea but I did manage to to get some great pieces at just one estate sale.
I picked up so many pieces at the estate sale that it took two truckloads to get it all home.  The two Hans Wegner style lounge chairs were sold quickly at Portland Flea.

I got two of these mid century daybeds.  They should be reupholstered by the end of the week.

The final piece from the estate sale was this mid century sofa.  It is now available at VDC for $750.

We had a great day at the Portland Flea and we sold quite a few pieces.

The Plycraft chair we upholstered this week is now available at Hawthorne Vintage.
